Free Your Data (FYD)

Described by its creators as an “episode-based political crowd-campaign,” the Free Your Data (FYD) campaign is bringing politicians and consumers together to lobby the European parliament for a new data-access law.

This law would empower individuals with better ways to monitor and control how companies use their personal information. More controversially, it also prevents the consolidation of data among a few tech giants.

Ali Jelveh, the founder of German startup Protonet and a leader of the FYD campaign, describes the law as an opportunity for consumers: ““[To be able] to sell your data, or to optimize it, or to have a data agent or a data lawyer … would open up huge new possibilities,” he says, “But for that to happen, you have to have access to it.”
